Off to a Great Start

Dear Pre-K Families,

After a wonderful summer, we the teachers are excited to start the 2012-13 School Year with your children. We have carefully prepared the classroom and are enjoying the first days of School with your children.

Here are some reminders about our Arrival Procedures for Pre-K.

Our doors open at 7:30a.m. each morning and you are welcome to drop-off anytime from that hour. However we suggest the children arrive no later that 8:30a.m., which is when “Circle Time” will promptly begin. To avoid distraction, whoever arrives after 8:30a.m., will stay in the small yard with one of the teachers until circle time is over. Remember, the only way we can teach punctuality is through our example. Following a consistent routine each morning will make your day go a lot smoother. When your child knows what to expect, you are giving him/her a sense of security and confidence.

School Lunches:

Your child’s lunch should be packed preferably in a lunch box. Since we are unable to refrigerate or warm up their lunches, please make sure you have ice packs for perishable food items and a thermos if you are sending food that’s meant to stay warm.

We want all our children to eat healthy, well-balanced meals. Please make every effort to pack only nutritious items. Only include food that you don’t mind in what order it’s being eaten. And although we are always happy to help the children during lunch, we want to encourage their age appropriate independence; please try to put their food in containers that you know your child can open and close on their own. In addition, we ask that you send in portions that you know your child will eat. We will try to send back any uneaten food so you can see how much and what your child is eating.

Cupcakes and other sugary food are allowed only during birthdays and holiday celebrations. Also, if you will be sending yogurt, please chose a yogurt that comes in a container and that they can eat it with a spoon, please do not send Go-Gurt.

Some tips that can help you have a “Great Morning” before School:

*Help your child lay out his/her uniform the night before.

*Plan a Breakfast Menu for the week; make sure to include them, let them choose on what day they want pancakes, scrambled eggs, oatmeal etc. This way they are responsible and have ownership of the choices made.

*Make sure they get a good night’s sleep; as you all know, children at this age need at least 12hours of sleep. After dinner, turn the TV off, and set the tone for bedtime.

*Although TV is unavoidable at times, make an effort to have NO TV in the morning before school. Children, who watch TV or play video games in the morning before school, have a harder time focusing because their brain is still trying to process all the images they just viewed. (If you are interested in articles on TV, please let us know.)

* On your way over to school, talk to him/her about their day ahead, what they are looking forward to, and let them know you’ll be back to pick them up when school is over; show them you are happy and excited for them to be at school, so they can too be happy to be there. If they see you are worried or nervous, they will feel worried and nervous too.

We thank you for letting us be a part of your children’s education, and are looking forward to a wonderful year of fun and learning!

THANK YOU!

A special thank you to Michelle and Missy, our room parents for providing and setting up the “goodies” this morning.

Thank you to all of you for coming today.  It was nice to see the children play and have fun.  Below I have copied parts of the letter that was mailed to you in June.  Please read about our opening hours, etc. for next week.

“School starts on August 20th.  On the 20th and the 21st we are open from 7:30-12:30,  the 22nd and 23rd from 7:30-3:00 and on Friday the 24th from 7:30-12:30.  Aftercare is available until 6pm every day.

Please note our school day will begin 8:30am and that is when all students should be signed in and ready to start the day.  If you, the parents want to stay with your child the first week you are welcome to.  Your child’s day will then be from 8:30-11am.   We understand that not all children are ready to say good bye right away in a new environment.  Sometimes bringing a little toy from home is helpful, this is different from bringing toys to play with during the day and your child will be asked to put the comfort toy in his/her cubby when we feel he/she is ready for it.  Aside from a comfort toy we like students to keep their personal toys at home and use the school toys at school.

Our Parent Club is planning many fun events next school year.   They are offering a mixed of parent education classes, information classes,  social events, etc.  Mark your calendars and join our school community for these events.

Every class at our school have a room parent.  In pre-k we have two, Michelle Walter and Melissa Stone.  If you have any questions about the parent club or the school you can ask them.  You are also welcome to email me.

Good Shepherd School is doing its best to save our world and communicate mostly through our blog, prekgs.wordpress.com, or email.  Please go on our blog and sign up to subscribe.  The box is in the upper right hand corner.  When you are signed up you will receive an email every time the blog is updated. “

We, Ms. Hellstrom, Mrs. Bramon-Simonian, Mrs. Aizpuru and Mrs. Lynem, are very excited to get to know the children and learn more about them.

If you have any questions, please email me, phellstrom@gsbh.net and I will get back with you as soon as possible.

WELCOME TO SCHOOL!

On Saturday, August 18th, all parents, students and siblings are welcome to the school.  The pre-k classroom will be open between 9:30-10:30.  Please bring a picture of your family on this day.

Pre-k will be open 7:30-12:30 on Monday and Tuesday 7:30-12:30 and you can drop your child off as any other day.  All pre-k parents are on the School Reach message, with email that are sent out from the main office.  You will learn what pertains to pre-k and what does not.  To accommodate “working” families we are opening for drop off on the 20th.  Let me know if you have any questions.

We are very excited to start the new school year.  The teachers have a lot to do to get the classroom ready for the next week, but are looking forward to meeting you all.

The people working in pre-k this year is Ms. Hellstrom, Mrs. Bramon, Mrs. Aizpuru and Mrs. Lynem.

See you on Saturday!
