Merry Christmas to all of you from us in Pre-K!

The Night Before Christmas

(source: http://www.hellokids.com/c_11146/reading/poems/christmas-poems/the-night-before-christmas)

By Henry Livingston or Clement Moore

It was the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And Mamma in her ’kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap;
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny rein-deer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
“Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof,
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof –
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he look’d like a pedlar just opening his pack.
His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlfull of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And fill’d all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night.”

December 12th Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe

December 12th is the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. We will be learning all about what happen on that Miraculous December day in Mexico. The children will have art projects and even be able to act out the skit of the Appiration of the Lady of Guadalupe. We will have churros to celebrate and will listen to Mexican Marrachi Music. This is a very Important day for many people throughout the world. It is especially a very important day for me because in my family and culture, this day officially begins the Christmas Season.

As I mentioned earlier this is a huge celebration for many people and in the church. I will be participating in a Procession in my Parish of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. I have the honor of representing Our  Lady of Guadalupe  on a float. The celebration begins at 6pm and there is a bilingual mass to follow. My father and i are also in the choir there and will be singing for this mass. After the mass the celebration will continue with a Party in the Church parking lot. it truly is a fun, culturally rich, faith filled event! I have attended this event since i was a child and have nothing but great memories of it. I really hope to be able to share some of my culture with you and see you there!

God Bless and with Love Miss Franco =)

Toy Drive

Our service learning project for this month is the toy drive. The 5th graders are the sponsors. Each child is asked to bring in a wrapped toy, with sticker stating the appropriate age for the toy and gender. We are focusing on 4 year old children but younger is also ok. This toy will be devlivered to Good Shepherd Parish center on Thursday, December 18.

Jolly Old St. Nicolas

Our song that we will be performing for the Christmas Program on December 18th is Jolly old St. Nicholas. Please practice this song at home with your child. If you would like to sing along with the melody and the lyrics you can go to http://www.kididdles.com/lyrics/j018.html

Jolly old Saint Nicholas,
Lean your ear this way,
Don’t you tell a single soul
What I’m going to say.
Christmas Eve will soon be here,
Now you dear old man,
Whisper what you’ll bring to me,
Tell me if you can.

When the clock is striking twelve,
When I’m fast asleep,
Down the chimney with your pack,
Softly you will creep.
All the stockings you will find,
Hanging in a row,
Mine will be the shortest one,
You’ll be sure to know.

Johnny wants a pair of skates,
Susie needs a sled,
Nelly wants a storybook —
One she hasn’t read.
As for me, I hardly know,
So I’ll go to rest;
Choose for me, dear Santa Claus,
What you think is best

Shhh – don’t tell the kids;)

On Friday, December 19, we will have a gift exchange in prek. This will only work if all families particiaptes in bringing in a wrapped gift (toy)  suitable for both a boy and a girl.  Don’t spend more than $10 for your gift. Don’t show your child the gift, bring it into the office or hide it somewhere and tell us in presk where it is and we will put it where it belongs.

On the 19th when the students are coming Santa will already have visited our classroom and left gifts under the tree. Each student will pull a number and that is the gift he/she will TAKE  home to open. No gifts will be opened at school since we don’t want children to be upset or disappointed, when opening at home it will only be an exciting experience:)

The Annual Christmas program will take place on Thursday, December 18, 1:45pm. The prek students will walk with their Buddy class to church, process indoors with the rest of the school, sing their song, then they will find their parents and sit with you throughout the rest of the program.

On Wednesday, Dec. 17, we are also walking to church to practice the singing. We are leaving at 12:40 and will return after singing our song.
