PROTECTING CHILDREN — WHAT CAN I DO?
Many of us have seen reports in the media about the continuing repercussions resulting from the pedophile scandals, leaving us to feel angry or depressed or helpless. There are, however, things that we all can do to prevent these events from reoccurring in the future. The American Bishops met in Dallas in 2000 and set out programs and procedures to protect children. Priests, members of religious orders, and educators have all taken on extra burdens in order to protect our children and they have done so gladly. We are offering an opportunity for everyone to participate in stamping out this evil. One of our strongest weapons against it is knowledge. Therefore, the bishops have required that people who work or volunteer for the Church receive special training. In our own Archdiocese, the program for that training is called VIRTUS.
To become VIRTUS certified, one takes a class called “Protecting God’s Children.” After four years, it is necessary to become re-certified. That can be done either by taking “Protecting God’s Children” again or attending a shorter re-certification class called “Keeping the Promise Alive.”
Who is required to be VIRTUS certified? Everyone who works for the parish or volunteers in any of its organizations or ministries. This includes catechists, liturgical musicians, ushers, lectors, and Eucharistic ministers. Who should take the class, whether required to do so or not? Anyone who is the parent of a child or anyone who wants to protect children. Classes are offered continuously throughout the archdiocese. They can be found at www.VIRTUS.org.
Here at Good Shepherd we have scheduled “Protecting God’s Children” classes (for initial certification or re-certification) on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, June 12, 2010, at 1:30 p.m.
If you wish to sign up for one of these classes or merely ask questions about what is being done to protect children, contact Patrecia Formeca, the Director of Religious Education and VIRTUS Facilitator for the parish. She can be reached by calling (310) 285-5424 x 201.
